Big Changes Start With Me: Erika Ponce

The journey towards sustainability isn't an easy one, but with each commitment to mindful action, it becomes a more attainable reality.

In this series of interviews, we shed light on how young Filipinos are contributing to bring this collective dream of ours to life.

It's an honor to have Erika Ponce with us for this.

How are you celebrating Earth Day?

Within the closed quarters of my home, three candles lit, and my daily journal by my side. I plan to take this time to self-reflect and nurture my thoughts.

What's the biggest change you've made for the environment?

I've always believed that change starts with you. It does not necessarily have to be a grand gesture. A small change in habit can begin a chain reaction to making an impact in the greater scheme of things. A conscious change in habit I have developed would be my switch from disposable plastic bags to reusable bags such as canvas tote bags (which you will literally see me carry 24/7). I apply these practices in my work life as well, by incorporating sustainable packaging and the like. Working in the fashion and arts industry is challenging yet I do my best to make my work as ethical as possible. I find purpose working with brands that are ethically sound and veer away from harmful practices, such as fast fashion.

What are your main resources of information about the realities of climate change?

Surrounding myself with individuals that are well versed and up to date about the news on climate change and environmental crises. My main sources of information range from my family, my friends, to my work.

Can you give at least 3 actionable steps that we can take in our daily lives to secure a better future?

Perhaps the best things we can do and incorporate in our daily lives would be to stay aware and educated regarding the different happenings in our world. This is not only limited to environmental changes, but anything with a global impact.

The next step I would suggest would be to find ways you as an individual can help in solving the issue, regardless of the size of its impact.

Last would be to actually apply these changes to our daily lives and genuinely discuss the actions we take to make a difference and inspire or influence others.

What does your ideal green future look like?

A world full of individuals who try and include as much positive impact is how I think I would describe my ideal green future. It would be a world where everyone does what they can to make a difference, regardless of what these actions may be. Change begins with you; it is up to us on how we want to write our future.
